UB Dance students have been invited to present at the prestigious 2018 WHITE WAVE DUMBO Dance Festival in Brooklyn, NY to be held at the Gelsey Kirkland Arts Center, a 300 seat theater in one of the world’s dance hubs, New York City. From October 11th-14th 2018, seven undergraduate dance majors ranging from sophomores to seniors will attend the festival and perform awhile, a dance work conceived and choreographed by Clinical Assistant Professor and University at Buffalo dance alumna Danielle Lydia Sheather.
The DUMBO Dance Festival boasts, “a long-time history of nurturing the work of emerging artists…<and> is dedicated to showcasing the freshest and the most individual voices in the dance field today.” Performances will showcase an estimated 75 emerging and established choreographers/dance companies from both the US and abroad. This year’s festival is expected to attract more than 3,500 people including prominent New York City dance critics. If selected during the festival the students could also be given the opportunity to attend the 2019 New Dance Festival in Korea or the 2019 Detroit Dance City Festival.
This experience for current UB Dance majors would provide them with exposure to a professional performance by continuing their education on a National Stage and an opportunity to perform alongside professional dance companies from around the world. They would attend concerts choreographed by artists they may otherwise never witness. In an effort to expand their personal aesthetics and be exposed to networking possibilities students will attend the Opening Gala featuring, “stellar performances by six companies from the DUMBO Dance Festival roster and WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company.” Since the festival is attended by prominent dance critics, the students will be exposed to performing under circumstances they are not accustomed to in the academic field.
Additionally, students would also be representing The University at Buffalo, UB Dance, and the Buffalo Dance Community all while garnering more practical experience in the field.

"I created awhile on seven undergraduate dance majors who worked tirelessly in the studio with constant dedication and unwavering passion. The amount of growth I witnessed in these young pre-professionals during the choreographic process was simply astounding! I hope to make this professional opportunity a possibility for them. I would be elated to bring these young dance artists to New York City "paying it forward" to the next generation of UB Dancers!"
