I want to personally thank you for your generous donation to our seismometer challenge fundraiser. You’ve played a major role in our effort to improve teaching and experiential learning experience for our students.
Thank you for your generosity!

Teaching and Training of Geophysics at UB
The Department of Geology at UB is one of the foremost educators in geophysics in New York State. With the rapid advances in instrumentation and data acquisition in the geosciences, the demand for student training in geophysical data acquisition and data processing is at an all-time high. Our alumni have also discussed the benefits of a strong geophysics training program. We are excited that the Department recognizes this and is positioning itself to meet this existential need of the future workforce in the geosciences. The Department currently has three geophysics related courses. To provide students with hands-on and experiential learning opportunities in geophysical data acquisition and processing, we are developing a new Geophysics & Hydrology Field Course, which will complement our long-running, and highly successful traditional Geologic Field Training (also known as Field Camp). We are also developing a new degree program in Computational Geosciences. These are all in an effort to prepare our students to meet the contemporary needs of the environmental, water, energy, and agricultural industries.
These exciting new developments come with an urgent need for modern geophysical instruments. The Department currently has modern instruments for teaching and training students in most of the core geophysical methods, such as electrical resistivity, electromagnetic induction, and ground penetrating radar. Conspicuously missing, however, is a modern seismometer for teaching and training students in the all-important seismic methods.
The cost of a new seismometer is quoted at $30,000, and we currently have an account with only $20,000. This fundraising campaign is targeted at raising the additional $10,000 needed to purchase the seismometer for teaching and training students in seismic methods in the Department
How can you help? Make a donation to this crowdfunding effort page. Donations of any size will help us accomplish our goals of improving teaching and training of students in geophysics in the Department. Sharing the crowdfunding page with friends and colleagues will also go a long way to help us reach our target.
Remember, what Medical Imaging is to Medicine, Geophysical Imaging is to Geoscience!!
