The Office of International Education and the broader UB community work hard to ensure that international students have the financial support they need during times of crisis and emergency.
University at Buffalo is home to more than 4,500 international students from all over the world. These students’ participation in the classroom and presence on campus contribute to a diverse and inclusive educational experience that benefits all students. The Steven L. Shaw Memorial International Student Emergency Fund provides emergency assistance to international students in financial distress.
To date, the International Student Emergency Fund has helped over 66 students from 16 different countries representing over 30 different degree programs with awards totaling over $51,400, but there are still hundreds of students in need. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will help make a significant impact in our students' education, lives in Buffalo and beyond.
What students have to say about the program:
“This has been one of the most difficult times for me here in Buffalo as an international student and first time traveler to the United States and I am more than glad that there’s a fund like this one that’s available for me in time of this unfortunate crisis. Thank you for reaching out your arms through this donation by extension I have felt the love.”
-Ogechi, PhD student in the School of Social Work
"I am extremely thankful for The Steven L. Shaw Memorial International Scholarship and its donors. This fund has provided me the opportunity to cover my basic needs and see my children, when I was faced with an unexpected financial distress during my semester."
-Amanda, 2nd year Master's student in the School of Social Work
Did you know you might be able to increase your support of Student Emergency Funds through an employer match? Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match—doubling and sometimes tripling— charitable contributions made by their employees. Some companies also match gifts made by retirees.
