Understanding Our World, One Story at a Time
In today’s rapidly changing world, understanding how gender and sexuality shape our experiences is vital. The Department of Global Gender and Sexuality Studies (GGSS) at the University at Buffalo equips students with the tools to analyze how identity intersects with culture, history, and society. Through thought-provoking courses and real-world applications, GGSS fosters critical thinking and empathy—skills essential for tackling complex challenges.
“GGSS has experienced vibrant growth over the last five years, as we hire new faculty from across the country. As a department tasked with educating students about women and genders right our classes our booming: students want to know and our passionate about attaining equality for many kinds of people. We see our department as drawing on the rich history of activism not only at the University at Buffalo but also in Western New York including abolitionism, struggle for gender equality, black women's activism, and LGBTQ plus rights. Our students want to know how they can take what they learn in our classrooms into the world, and they have gone on to law school, to teach, to found and lead nonprofits. Our students are also active in local nonprofit work while they are graduate students, and prove themselves to be vital local leaders every day.”

Your Support Makes a Difference
Every dollar you contribute directly supports students, research, and programs that advance the mission of GGSS.
“Although we have grown in faculty we are always struggling to make our budget stretch to the many activities we plan for our students. We bring in speakers, plan professionalization workshops, hold regular get togethers for undergraduates to meet each other, and are actively developing relationships with other departments and schools. Our faculty are also always actively involved in bringing in external funding to the school and to the department funds that we hope we'll build more infrastructure to support student growth. As we head into more fraught and dangerous times we know that our students are concerned about their rights, and they come to us to ask about what models for civic participation have existed in the past, and what they need to know for their futures.”
